Rising sea levels could displace millions: Scientists
Updated
Scientists have warned that global sea levels are likely to rise by up to one-and-a-half metres by the end of this century, potentially displacing millions of people.
Researchers in Britain and Finland presented the findings at a major conference, saying this will have a devastating impact on island countries in the Pacific and low lying countries like Bangladesh.
One of the scientists, Svetlana Jevrejeva, says ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at a much faster rate than previously thought.
"The larger contribution in the future will be from ice sheets, not from thermal expansion, and not from glaciers. Ice sheets could dramatically change whats going on with sea level rise," she said.
