Corporate partnerships vital to climate agreements: UN
Updated
The United Nations has told a meeting of global business leaders in Singapore that a new international climate agreement can only progress with the corporate sector in partnership.
The executive director of the United Nations environment program Achim Steiner says countries are still deeply divided on a new climate agreement.
He's told the meeting the market is a key part of the equation to create the political will for action.
"Structuring these kinds of partnerships is therefore a critical path where governments the business community and the public have got to work together," he said.
He says a carbon market will create the economic stimulus to move forward, and the corporate sector must be on board if talks in Copenhagen next year are to deliver on a new climate agreement beyond Kyoto.
