The United Nations has launched what it is calling an international climate index to make countries more accountable on climate change.

Our reporter in Singapore, Sarah Clarke, says under a climate index, countries will declare how they're setting up their economies to tackle global warming - whether it be through tax incentives, carbon efficiencies or a government's investment in scientific research.

Achim Steiner, from the UN's environment program, says it is a transparent way to assess how much is being done.

"Because ultimately, investors and also companies will look at economies, nations, and say well if you go into that country you're going to be in a much better state to deal with a post-Kyoto One agreement," he said.

He also told a UN meeting in Singapore that it will make countries more accountable in the next round of climate negotiations.
