Nauru government wins increased majority in snap election

In Nauru, the government of President Marcus Stephen has been returned to power with an increased majority after Saturday's snap election.

Mr Stephen can expect at least 10 members in the 18-seat parliament, which should end a two0month political deadlock that has severely hampered the passing of essential budgetary bills.

The increased support for the government saw former president Rene Harris and two other opposition members lose their seats.

All government MPs retained their seats.

The parliament is now expected to sit on Tuesday when the final make-up of the house will be determined.
