UN holds food crisis meetings

The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, is meeting key development agencies to discuss the crisis of food and fuel prices.

Ahead of the meeting in the Swiss capital Berne, Mr Ban said it's hoped the two days of UN meetings will produce a battle plan of emergency measures.

It will also explore long-term measures intended to resolve the global food crisis.

Attending the meetings are officials from the World Food Program, the World Bank, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Ahead of the Berne talks, the British-based charity Oxfam urged the international community to suspend the use of biofuels, saying they are helping drive up food prices while their ability to reduce the impact of climate change is unproven.
