Award for Australian eye research centre
Updated
An Australian eye research centre has won an award recognising its work in Indigenous communities.
The Fred Hollows Foundation has been named as the best-practice non-government organisation in Australia at the annual Australian Charity Awards.
The Foundation's chief executive, Brian Doolan, says its an honour but there's much that still needs to be done - especially in Central Australia.
"Australia is the only developed country in the world where trachoma is still endemic," he said. "And that's just unacceptable."
"We've got to put in place the programs to remove trachoma - a blinding disease - which has been wiped out in every other developed country in the world."
