Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, says the boat accident on Sydney Harbour that left six people dead is every parent's worst nightmare.

Four women and a man in their late teens and early 20s, died when the small repair boat they were in collided with a fishing trawler in the early hours of the morning.

Another man died of his injuries in hospital on Thursday evening.

Our reporter, Bill Birtles, says while police haven't released details, the American embassy has confirmed that a US national was among the victims.

In total there were 14 people on the overcrowded boat and police say they are investigating witness reports that alcohol was involved.

Police are interviewing the six other people who were on the boat.
