Deported Australian publisher criticises Fiji
Updated
The Australian newspaper editor deported from Fiji has strongly criticised the country's interim government when he arrived back in Sydney on Saturday.
The Fijian government said they were expelling Fiji Times editor Evan Hannah because he had breached his work permits and was a threat to national security.
At Sydney airport, Mr Hannah said Fiji's treatment of him was an attack on the freedom of the press.
"This is another demonstration that the interim government still doesn't understand the concept of press freedom, media freedom. They persistently insist that a publisher directs editorial content and makes decision about editorial content which we have told them several times we don't. So this is an attempt to initimidate again. It's a big mistake of course, the Fiji Times newsroom is a pretty solid newsroom. They won't be moved by this."
