Australia's government is reviewing the nation's defence logistics as part of it reassessment of the former Liberal/National governnment's priorities.

The Labor government ha commissioned a review of the defence department's procurement program, worth$US 9.5 billion a year.

It will look at improving the cost effectiveness of purchases.

Parliamentary secretary for defence procurement Greg Combet says there have been high profile problems.

"Recently the government cancelled the super Seaspright helicopter project where in excess of one billion dollars worth of money had been wasted by the previous government," he said.

"Those are the sorts of experiences that we don't want to repeat and that's part of the reason why we have commissioned this review."

The Seasprite fleet was indefinitely grounded in 2006, as the upgraded helicopters were unable to be operated reliably in poor visibility conditions and at night.
