PNG housing shortage blamed on bureaucracy

Papua New Guinea's housing minister has blamed the country's housing shortage on bureaucratic red-tape, conflicts of interest and management problems.

Andrew Kumbakor also criticised superannuation funds, saying they've shown little interest in providing affordable housing for members.

He says superfunds make huge annual profits but pursue housing schemes that are out of reach for average wage earners.

In the National newspaper he also said the National Housing Corporation lacks a clear policy on housing programs for workers and public servants.

Mr Kumbakor says there have been disputes between the government and the Corporation, which he says is incompetently managed.
