Guam's street lights to go off over unpaid bill

Updated May 8, 2008 04:55:50

Guam's streetlights will be turned off from next week, because the territorial government has failed to pay an outsanding power bill of $US12 million.

The Consolidated Commission on Utilities has approved a resolution, allowing the Guam Power Authority to disconnect streetlights because of the government's overdue account.

Power Authority spokesman Art Perez says residents will be told when their streets will go dark, and says the lights will stay off until the government pays up.

"We've set a target date of Monday of next week to begin disconnecting streetlights," he told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program.

"Between now and then, GPA operations will be planning a course of action of how to proceed to disconnect different lights throughout the villages.

"We will put together a schedule to let the different parts of the viillages know GPA will be in these areas to disconnect lights."

If the government does pay the bill, it will face the same reconnection fee that applies to all domestic customers.
