Rise in tax-deductible donations by Australians

New research shows tax-deductible donations by Australians rose by more than $US79 million in a year.

The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Non-profit Studies at the Queensland University of Technology has found Australians donated tax-deductible gifts worth more than $US1.4 billion in the 2005 to 2006 financial year - an increase of more than $US79 million on the previous year.

The Centre's analysis of taxation statistics also found taxpayers in New South Wales donated more of their taxable income than other any state or territory, with Queensland donating the least.

The number of millionaires making tax-deductible donations dropped by four per cent.
