Security has been tightened around all foreign missions in Suva in the wake of a death threat against Australia's High Commissioner to Fiji.

The High Commision says the threat against James Batley appeared to be politically-motivated.

Police say they are confident of finding the person responsible after receiving a good description from a taxi driver who was asked to deliver the threatening letter.

Police in the capital say they will maintain increased patrols and surveillance around all foreign missions.

The Australian foreign minister, Stephen Smith, says if those responsible think the threat will force a change of policy from his government, they are incorrect.

"It won't have any affect whatsoever," he said.
