Australia to help justice system access to disadvantaged in ETimor
Updated
Australia has launched a program to help disadvantaged people in East Timor access the justice system.
The program will provide $US26 million in funding over five years.
The Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, Bob McMullan, is in East Timor for the launch.
Mr McMullan says many East Timorese have lost confidence in the legal system due to years of civil unrest.
"We are in the process of trying to help the justice system by helping the administration of the system and helping the poor people get access to justice, a bit like what we think of in Australia as Legal aid," he said.
