Australia is being urged to try to encourage the United States to ratify the nuclear test ban treaty.
The head of the treaty commission Tibor Toth is due to meet the Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith on Monday in Canberra.
Ambassador Tot says he'll be encouraging Australia to help achieve the final nine ratifications needed to ensure the survival of the treaty.
" I will ask the continued support and increased support, political support of Australia. It's important that vis-a-vis the other eight countries as well. Of course the possibile ratification of the United States can be a catalyst in the future."
