India marks 10 years as nuclear weapons state

Updated May 12, 2008 15:32:38

The 10th anniversary of India's underground nuclear tests has passed with no official ceremonies.

India tested five nuclear devices near the desert village of Pokhran, in the northern state of Rajasthan, in May 1998.

The event stunned the world and served as the occasion for India to declare itself a nuclear weapons state.

The tests in India were followed the same month by a series of nuclear tests by Pakistan.
