Bali bombers file third appeal

Three men sentenced to death for their role in the 2002 Bali bombings have filed a third appeal for a review of their case.

Denpasar district court chief judge I Nyoman Gede Wirya said another appeal was filed on Tuesday against the 2003 convictions for the attack against tourist night-spots on the popular resort island, which killed 202 people - 88 of them Australians.

"We have seen and studied this third demand for a review that we have just received," he said.

He said the documents were filed by the condemned men themselves, not their lawyers, and featured a photograph of their smiling faces on the cover.

"We have no authority to reject the demand because it is addressed to the Supreme Court. We are just accepting the documents and will forward them to the Supreme Court," he added.

After their last appeal was withdrawn, the Supreme Court said the three Islamists - Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron - had exhausted all avenues for further reviews of their convictions.

However it was not immediately clear whether the court would change its mind on the basis of some exceptional circumstance and agree to a third review.

The inmates are awaiting execution by firing squad.
