Review of Australia's fuel tax not contradictory: govt
Updated
The Australian government says its review of the Goods and Services Tax paid on petrol does not contradict the prime minister's assertion that he has done all he can on fuel prices.
The government has revealed its taxation review will consider whether to scrap the extra 10 per cent tax charged on top of the fuel excise.
It comes just days after the prime minister, Kevin Rudd, declared there was little more he could do to ease the pressure on family budgets.
The assistant treasurer, Chris Bowen, says the government never ruled out delivering further relief.
"What the prime minister was saying was that we have done everything in our power, to this point in time, to help people who are dealing with the cost of living pressure," he said.
"But as we go, of course we will continue to examine whatever more can be done and to do whatever more can be done."
