Cambodia frees up vital rice surplus

Updated May 27, 2008 14:28:56

Cambodia has lifted a ban on rice exports to reduce global concerns over supplies of the grain.

The prime minister, Hun Sen, imposed the ban in late March in a bid to halt the staple food's spiraling prices.

Saying the country has enough rice for its own needs, the premier says the lifting of the ban would also help reduce global concerns over supplies of rice.

But to maintain the nation's reserves, he says exports must go through the government system and will be limited to 1.6 million tonnes.
