Elections may not be held in Fiji next March

A key member of Fiji's interim government has indicated his country will not meet its promise of elections in March next year.

Last October, interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama committed to elections in March 2009, during the Pacific Island's Forum Leaders meeting in Tonga.

But the government of Australia, and other countries in the region, doubt Fiji will be ready.

Those concerns have been dismissed up to now, and on Tuesday Fiji appointed a New Zealand lawyer as its election supervisor.

But interim Attorney General, Aiyez Sayed Kayum says the commitment to March 2009 was only made to the European Union last year as part of an agreement to ensure sugar subsidies, and there is flexibility.

"Nobody seems to be reading the line after March 2009, he said.

"What I'm saying is that if you look at those odd 15 or 16 commitments that we did give, it does state that the proper logistics have to be in place."
