Amnesty International has released its annual report praising Australia's new government and repeating its concerns about the US.

Our Europe correspondent, Rafael Epstein, reports the human rights groups says as the world's superpower and a democracy the US must lead by example.

Amnesty says the US must close Guantanamo Bay now and any secret prisons.

The report says China must live up human rights promises made in its Olympic bid, and Amnesty also targets Russia - saying Moscow refuses to tolerate political dissent.

The group has praised Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, for his apology to indigenous Australians, but says it is watching with concern the prevalence of child abuse in indigenous communities.
