Greenpeace confronts Spanish ship off Kirabati
Updated
The environmental group Greenpeace has tried to stop a Spanish owned tuna ship, from fishing off the Phoenix Islands in Kiribati.
Activists dropped a 25 metre floating banner carrying the message "No Fish, No Future" into the tuna boats trawling net.
The Greenpeace ship, Esperanza had been tailing the Albatun Ters for five days; dropping the banner in the hope it would damage the tuna net, making it unusable.
Greenpeace says the Albatun Tres can net more than 3,000 tonnes of tuna in a single fishing trip -- almost double the entire annual catch of some Pacific island nations.
Pacific nations last week agreed to ban licensed tuna vessels from fishing in international waters between their islands - the new rules take effect from June 15th.
