Taiwanese leader meets Chinese president
Updated
Political leaders from Taiwan and mainland China have held their highest level meeting in almost 60 years.
Our China correspondent Stephen McDonell reports, from Beijing, as a sign of easing tensions between Taiwan and mainland China, the chairman of Taiwan's ruling Guomindang, Wu Poh-hsiung, has met the president of China at the Great Hall of the People.
Chinese television showed Wu meeting President Hu Jintao and the two shaking hands and smiling.
President Hu said he hoped the meeting could "push forward to peaceful cross strait development".
The talks were organized after the Guomindang's Ma Ying-jeou won Presidential elections on a platform of promoting closer ties with China.
It's the first such meeting since the Guomindang fled to Taiwan after losing power to the Communist Party in 1949.
