Iraq's government has contacted soccer's governing body FIFA, raising hopes the international ban on Iraq could be lifted before Sunday's world cup qualifier against Australia in Brisbane.

The team is facing a 12-month suspension because its government announced that it was disbanding its National Olympic Committee.

A decision on whether Sunday's match will go-ahead is expected to be made late Thursday.
