Taiwan-China relations good for Solomons: Sikua
Updated
The Solomon Islands prime minister, Derek Sikua, says improving relations between Taiwan and China will be good for his country.
Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation quotes Dr Sikua as saying a strong diplomatic connection between Taipei and Beijing is the best approach to defuse any form of political or military confrontation between the two sides.
He says it will also provide dynamic trade development benefits, to which Solomon Islands would indirectly become a beneficiary.
Dr Sikua was responding to concern that the shift in policy by the new government of Taiwan to establish a strong trade relations with China might jeopardise the current relationship between Taiwan and Solomon Islands.
Solomon Islands is one of six Pacific island nations which recognise Taiwan rather than China.
