Japan has announced it's doubling its emergency aid to China to almost $US10 million to help with the earthquake recovery effort.

The quake which struck southwest China's Sichuan province on May 12th, has killed more than 68,000 people and displaced 15 million others.

Earlier, Japan said it was shelving plans for its military to fly aid to China.

Tokyo said it would now deliver the tents and blankets by charter plane instead.
