The Australian Socceroos are in a strong position to advance to the next stage of World Cup qualifying after beating Iraq one-nil in Brisbane last night.

Skipper Harry Kewell scored with a header just after half time, while Iraq squandered numerous chances to draw level.

Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer says his side has plenty to work on in the lead-up to next week's return match in Dubai.

"We're not going to be happy with the way we were split open at times, and we are going to need to work on that and improve on that - especially when we are away," he said.

"The conditions are going to be very extreme over there in Dubai, and we need to be on top of our game and make sure we don't make those sort of mistakes again."
