Solomons PM denies Taiwan chequebook diplomacy

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Derek Sikua says in the past 25 years of Solomon Islands diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the government tried to ensure that the relationship is not based on chequebook diplomacy.

Solomon Islands' Broadcasting Corporation quotes him as saying the assistance that the country is getting from Taiwan is based on its needs for development.

He says that it is these needs that Taiwan has responded to positively.

Prime Minister Sikua dismissed the allegations that Solomon Islands relations with Taiwan is based on chequebook diplomacy.

He also welcomed the improving situation between Taiwan and mainland China.
