Conservative Muslim school condemns terrorism

An ultra conservative Muslim seminary in India has issued a fatwa, or edict, against terrorism.

The Darool-Uloom Deoband, which is said to have inspired the Taliban, is a 150-year-old institute controlling thousands of smaller Islamic seminaries in India.

It's rector, Habibur Rehman, told thousands of clerics and students at a meeting in New Delhi that Islam rejects all kinds of unjust violence, breach of peace, bloodshed, murder and plunder.

Teachings of the Deoband school and its strict interpretation of Islamic law have spread to many countries, but the group has always denied any connection with the Taliban.

India's 140 million Muslims have welcomed the fatwa, saying the actions of a few have tarnished the image of the communuity as a whole.
