Strong quake off Australia's Macquarie Island
Updated
A strong magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck nearly 800km off Australia's Macquarie Island.
The US Geological Survey says the quake hit at 12:31am local time on Monday, and was shallow at a depth of 10km.
There were no immediate reports of damage and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a tsunami warning.
Macquarie Island, which is about 34km long and just 5km wide, lies in the Pacific Ocean about half-way between Australia and Antarctica and is officially part of Tasmania - more than 1,400km away.
Its population of between 20 and 40 people is made up of members of the Australian Antarctic Division, which maintains a permanent base on the island.
