Tonga chief justice to receive World Bank award

Updated June 3, 2008 17:08:14

Tonga's Chief Justice Anthony Ford is travelling to New York to receive the World Bank Reformer of the Year Award on behalf of the Supreme Court of Tonga.

Matangi Tonga reports the annual award is given to an organisation, institution or country that has been successful in turning around its operations.

The Tongan Supreme Court won this year's award by striking out close to 100 per cent of dormant or inactive cases, placing others on a strict timetable, introducing mediation, and increasing the jurisdiction of the Magistrate's Court.

Chief Justice Ford says the reforms came at a time when the Tongan courts have never been busier.
