Australia provides $US6m for Pacific women's leadership
Updated
Australia says it will work with Pacific Governments and the United Nations to strengthen women's leadership in the region.
The Australian government will provide about $US6 million for the women's leadership programme in the Pacific over five years, in partnership with the UN Development Fund for Women.
The parliamentary secretary for international development assistance, Bob McMullan, says women are significantly under-represented in decision-making positions in the Pacific.
He says only an average 2.5 per cent of parliamentary members in the Pacific region are women - compared to the world average of about 18 per cent.
