Burma survivors still lacking assistance: Humanitarian groups
Updated
Humanitarian groups now say as many as a million survivors of last month's cyclone in Burma are still without basic assistance.
They say the government-organised refugee camp at Labutta in the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta region is typical of the state of affairs.
While a small amount of government help has reached Labutta, aid groups say Rangoon has failed to speed up the arrival of international aid.
The government insists aid is flowing continuously to cyclone victims.
But United Nations spokesman Richard Horsey says as many as 2.4 million people are still homeless and hungry.
"Clearly there is still a huge amount to be done," he said.
"We are not yet at the stage where we are getting sufficient quantities of relief assistance to all those people who need it, and obviously, that has been very frustrating.
"We are now in a better position to provide more assistance to more people but it has taken longer than we would have hoped to scale up this operation because of a number of factors which have delayed things."
