There has also been strong seismic activity in South East Asia as a strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake has hit off the Indonesian island of Flores.

The quake came hours after a moderate 5.2 magnitude quake hit off Indonesia's Sumatra island further northwest.

It says it was located 185 kilometres southwest of the city of Sibolga in North Sumatra province and was 35 kilometres deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage from either quake and the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency has not issued a tsunami warning.
