PNG villagers hang alleged murderer

In Papua New Guinea, villagers in Enga have handed down vigilante-style justice, hanging a mentally ill man over an alleged murder.

Our reporter in Port Moresby, Firmin Nanol, says the man was accused of killing a school teacher last month after taking drugs.

He died when he was hanged on a cross for several days.

PNG's Enga provincial Deputy Governor, Miki Kaeok, has condemned the killing.

''Whether retarded or normal person he has the right to live on this earth," he said.

"They should have brought him to justice. You know, crucifying him is not right for the public to watch.

"And I condemn both killings''.

He says they should not have taken the law into their own hands as it protects all kinds of people.
