Protests mark Tiananmen Square anniversary

Updated June 4, 2008 19:39:56

Amnesty International has held a demonstration in the eastern Australian city of Sydney to commemorate the 19th anniversary of China's Tiananmen Square protests,.

Amnesty believes thousands died in the pro-democracy killings in 1989, and is calling on the Chinese government to release people it says are still in jail over the protests.

Among those supporting the protest was a former Chinese consulate worker, Chen Yong-Lin, who defected to Australia several years ago and is now a refugee.

"They've been monitoring me of course for my activity," he said.

"Because I've been involved in the campaign in China, they want to know of course."
