Pressure to remove all imagery from cigarette packs
Updated
The Australian anti-smoking body, Quit, has called on the federal government to legislate to remove all logos, colour and imagery from cigarette packets.
The British government is considering forcing tobacco companies to sell cigarettes in plain packaging, as well as a ban on cigarette vending machines and point-of-sale promotion.
Quit's executive director, Fiona Sharkie, says stripping corporate logos and colours from cigarette packaging would make them less attractive to young people.
'We've recently seen very colourful, vivid packaging, also new cigarette pack designs," she said.
"We've also seen and heard of situations where microchips of popular music songs are being embedded into cigarette packs - all in an attempt to glamourise or make cigarette packs more of a fashion accessory."
