Australian PM marks World Environment Day

The Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, has marked World Environment Day by highlighting the government's plans to develop more fuel-efficient cars.

He says the government is focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the lowest possible cost for the country, and to help shape a global solution for the problem of climate change.

Mr Rudd has told Parliament one way to fix the problem is to make cars and other transport, cleaner and greener.

"Creating a new generation of fuel efficient cars, may not only make motoring more affordable and reduce our carbon footprint, it may also revitalise the Australian automotive industry," he said.

"These are all things worth fighting for, these are things which the Australian government stands ready to fight for in partnership with the automotive industry."
