Australia to train PNG paediatric surgeons
Updated
Australia plans to train five Papua New Guinean doctors to become paediatric surgeons over the next three years.
Our correspondent in Port Moresby, Firmin Nanol, reports Australia has been supporting and training PNG doctors over the past 10 years.
Every year doctors from Sydney's Westmead Children's Hospital visit and help PNG doctors perform difficult surgeries.
Chief Surgeon Doctor Albert Shun says the aim is help train PNG doctors do surgery on children.
He says PNG needs up to five paediatric surgeons to cover the country's four regions.
"We would like to see at least four paediatric surgeons in Papua New Guinea, preferably five," he said.
"At the moment we have three so we need to train two more."
Australia's international Aid Agency, AusAid supports the trainings through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
