Rudd to put oil on agenda during Japan visit

Australia's prime minister has put the rapidly increasing cost of oil on the agenda for his visit to Japan this week.

Kevin Rudd has arrived in Hiroshima starting a week-long trip to Japan and Indonesia.

Speaking before he left Canberra, Mr Rudd said all countries faced the problem of rapidly rising petrol prices due to the record high cost of oil.

He says pressure needs to be put on oil producing companies to increase supply in an effort to reduce petrol prices.

"When I go to Japan I'm speaking with prime minister Fukuda, [and] next month he'll be hosting the G-8 summit," he said.

"One of the matters I'll be raising with him, and writing to the other G-8 heads of government on, is the global challenge we have of global oil supply right now, because what is happening in Australia is happening worldwide."
