The Australian women's soccer team, the Matildas, have suffered a 3-0 defeat to Japan at the Asian Cup on Sunday.

The loss places them in overall fourth for the competition.

Yuki Nagasato opened the scoring for Japan in the 17th minute.

The Matildas showed moments of brilliance through the game, and looked set to level the score on a number of occasions.

But it was Japan who extended their lead 11 minutes from full time with Aya Miyama sending in a free-kick.

Japan rounded off the victory in the 87th minute after a corner was cleared only as far as Homare Sawa on the edge of the area, where the midfielder sent a dipping shot into the back of the net.
