Canadian hijack Fiji name for canned tuna

Updated June 9, 2008 21:05:29

Fiji is objecting to the use of the country's name by a supplier of canned tuna in Canada.

The supplier, Kohinoor Grocery Ltd, says it intends to label its tuna products Fiji Ocean.

Our reporter in Fiji, Samisoni Pareti, says the canned tuna is actually produced in Chile, yet the Canadian company published its intentions to use the label Fiji Ocean in March this year.

Fiji's solicitor general, Christopher Pryde, says his office has already lodged its objections on the use of the name Fiji with Canada's Intellectual Property Registry.

He says a decision of the registry is pending.

Mr Pryde said in a statement released by the Fiji Government's Information Department that objections are being made on the basis that the label was misleading - in that the products were not produced or sourced from Fiji.
