Australia, NZ give aid to Pacific NGOs
Updated
The Pacific Islands Association of Non Governmental Organisations has received millions of dollars in funding from New Zealand and Australia.
NZAID has given PIANGO $US3.4 million for programs over the next three years.
PIANGO has also received $284,000 from the Australian government's aid arm, AusAID, for the next 12 months.
PIANGO's Executive Director, Bakanebo Tamaroa, says the funding grants are a milestone for the organisation and help build effective relationships between NGOs and donors.
Acting New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Caroline McDonald, says both the New Zealand Government and PIANGO have shared interest in an active, informed and effective network of Civil Society Organisations in the Pacific.
She says New Zealand aims to contribute to the strengthening of governance at regional, national and local levels, including through building deeper relationships between governments and wider society.
The Australian aid grant will go towards AusAID's Pacific Leadership program and also to provide media training for PIANGO.
