Japan to cut greenhouse emissions by 14 per cent
Updated
Japan's prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, has unveiled a new climate change policy that sets a goal for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
He says the aim is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 14 per cent by 2020 from current levels which make the country the world's fifth-largest emitter.
Mr Fukuda says the matter must be handled in the near future because there's no longer the luxury of encouraging others or spending time playing a game of setting targets for political propaganda.
He says Japan will aim to cut its emissions by 60-80 per cent by 2050 and announce an interim target sometime next year
Mr Fukuda says he hopes to develop agreement on a shared vision to halve global emissions by mid-century at the Group of Eight summit.
The climate change session will also be attended by big emerging economies, China and India.
