Beijing to ban fireworks during Olympics

Updated June 10, 2008 22:23:49

Safety authorities in the Chinese capital say fireworks will be banned across Beijing during the Olympic Games in August.

A firework ban is already in place inside the Fifth Ring Road, a beltway around 10 kilometres out from the city centre.

The state-run China Daily newspaper says the curbs will now be extended to take in the whole of the capital.

The latest safety measures join a host of others taken ahead of the Olympic Games, as China tries to ensure the event goes smoothly.

The extended firework ban will be imposed from July 1 to October 8.
