American Samoa teachers win pay rise
Updated
About 400 American Samoa public school teachers will get their first pay rise in more than a decade.
New teachers starting in August, will have a beginning salary of around $US17,000 a year, compared with the current level of about 13,000 annually.
The Pacific News service reports, the pay increase has been approved by Governor Togiola Tulafono.
He says absenteeism among teachers in American Samoa is about 30 per cent, because many in the US territory feel underpaid and unrecognised for the service they provide.
