China and Taiwan agree to direct flights
Updated
Taiwan and China have agreed during historic negotiations to launch regular direct weekend passenger flights starting from next month.
Direct weekend charter flights will begin from the first week of July, with the first China tourists - up to 10 per group - arriving two weeks later.
Apart from special holidays, China has previously insisted flights to and from Taiwan are routed through a third territory such as Hong Kong or Macau.
The United States welcomed the talks saying it was important for the two sides to work toward a peaceful resolution.
