Fiji's immigration director, Viliame Naupoto, has criticised a US report condemning the county's supposed inaction on human trafficking, sex trade and forced labour.

Commander Naupoto says the US authorities have not done their research and have not consulted him.

He told Fijilive the Fiji government has done a lot to curb trafficking and smuggling.

He says people convicted of these offences face a fine of up to $US500,000.

He says he does not understand what led the US authorities to come to such a conclusion.
