China's President optimistic about relations with Taiwan

China's President Hu Jintao has described the resumption of talks with Taiwan as a good start on the path to better relations.

State media reports say his comments came during a meeting with Taiwan's chief negotiator.

Our China Correspondent Stephen McDonell says the two men met on the second day of landmark talks in Beijing that have seen a significant easing of travel restrictions between the two sides.

One time cold war enemies, Taiwan and mainland China have agreed to regular flights across the Taiwan straight.

Starting on July the 4th, 36 return flights will travel between Taiwan and the mainland every weekend.

The flights will run from Friday to Monday and increase according to demand.

According to the new agreement, all passengers with legal passes can travel.

The thawing of relations between Beijing and Taipei comes after this year's election of Taiwan's new president, Ma Ying Jeo who stood on a platform of building closer relations with the mainland.
