Call for government action on Australian petrol prices

The Australian Government is being urged to act now to ease the rising cost of petrol.

A Nielsen opinion poll, published in Fairfax newspapers, shows nearly 80 per cent of voters want direct action by the Government to cut fuel prices.

The poll also shows more than half of those surveyed aren't happy with the way the Government is handling rising petrol costs.

The Federal Opposition's finance spokesman Peter Dutton says the Government must adopt the Coalition's policy to cut fuel tax.

"People understand that the Federal Government has 38 cents a litre in taxes collected when people fill their tanks up and if they want to reduce petrol prices, the Federal Government can cut the price of excise," Mr Dutton said.

Government MP, Jason Clare, says the Prime Minister has done what he can, but he knows there's more work to do.

"We've introduced a petrol commissioner, we're pushing legislation through this Parliament that the Opposition are objecting to to introduce a fuel watch system," Mr Clare said.

"We recognise that there's a lot more work to be done but the bottom line is the work of Government's never done and petrol prices are a big issue for working Australians."
